What is Outpatient Drug Rehab?
Outpatient rehab is a competent of drug and alcohol treatment that usually comes after detox and residential care. Outpatient rehab means that someone is not physically living or staying where they are receiving treatment. Instead, they might be in sober living environment or even living at home while doing an outpatient program.
Outpatient programs differ on how many groups someone is expected to attend. Many places offer what is called intensive outpatient. This is where someone visits a facility and attends therapy and groups all day during a normal work week. You might think of this like recovery is their full time job for a few months. Other facilities have someone come just in the mornings or evenings for programming so that they can still have a job while doing the program.
Components of Outpatient Treatment
The specific elements of treatment programs depend on where someone receives care. Generally there are a few standard things that are offered at outpatient drug rehabs. Here are some elements that might be included in treatment:
- Personal Therapy
- Recovery meetings
- Relapse prevention groups
- Group therapy
- Specific workshops (e.g. a trauma workshop)
generally someone will be assigned a personal therapist who will be their therapist for the entire time they are in outpatient treatment. At many facilities there is also a psychiatrist on staff who can write prescriptions and treat any co-occurring disorders that might be present. In addition to this type of one-on-one care, facilities also provide group counseling. These groups are with other people who are also attending the outpatient program.
Some groups are general process groups while others have targeted topics. Some common group topics include: relapse prevention, medication management, psychoeducation, or family groups. Depending on the program, they might also offer groups that are centered around a certain type of therapy approach like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, or motivational interviewing.
In addition to these regular weekly groups many facilities also provide a weekly or monthly workshop. Sometimes these take a couple hours and others last all day. Workshops are often taught by specialists in their field who are invited to the outpatient to offer this kind of targeted programming. These workshops vary depending on where you are but some popular topics center around trauma healing or meditation techniques.
Many outpatient centers also hold recovery meetings. These might be alcoholics anonymous, refuge recovery, or smart recovery meetings. Sometimes recovery meetings are open to the public. Other centers prefer to invite only alumni of their program. If your center does have an alumni meeting this can be a great way to stay connected once you are finished with outpatient treatment.
Why is Outpatient Rehab Necessary?
These types of programs are necessary because they provide a step-down program after detox and residential care. It can be difficult to leave the safety of a residential treatment center. Outpatients often provide a lot of structure and support. In order to give people the best possible chance of staying sober you want to keep them connected while they are in early recovery. Attending an outpatient program can provide much needed structure and counseling as someone reintegrates into regular life.
